Decimal points show place value positions. When they're aligned, you add ones to ones, tenths to tenths, hundredths to hundredths. Misaligned decimals mix up these positions and give wrong answers!
Add zeros to make them equal! For example, change 3.5 to 3.50 when adding to 2.75. This helps you see the alignment clearly without changing the value.
Draw an imaginary straight vertical line through all the decimal points. If the line passes through every decimal point perfectly, your setup is correct!
Not for the final answer, but it's easier to put the larger number on top. This reduces borrowing and makes the calculation smoother.
You'll get a completely wrong answer! For example, 3.05 + 213.22 misaligned might give you 216.27 instead of the correct 216.27. Always double-check your alignment first.
