Receiving card payments from students

Updated Oct 11, 2026

Joining the service, card payments

If you choose to receive payment for a lesson by card, you first need to join PayPal's payment service. PayPal is an external payment provider, with its own separate terms of use and service.

For maximum convenience, you can perform actions on your PayPal account directly from your lesson calendar on the platform. That said, it's important to understand that each tutor's dealings are directly with PayPal, and subject to the company's terms of use.

The option to join PayPal appears under "Tasks" after you open your tutor account on the platform.

If you didn't sign up for PayPal's service this way, you can join through any other lesson that appears in your calendar.

Collecting card payment for a lesson

When a student registers on the platform and sends a request to a tutor, a PayPal add-payment-method form opens for them. At this stage, no payment is made, only the card details are saved.

Payment for the lesson is only made when the lesson ends, based on the actual lesson time and the price agreed between you.

After the lesson ends, the option to collect payment appears under "Tasks".

When you click the "Collect payment" button, you can enter the lesson length and the price per teaching hour, and you'll see the total amount to be charged.

When you click "Continue", the charge is processed. The student's payment is transferred from their payment method, minus the total 20% commission, directly to your PayPal account.

Transaction tracking and withdrawing payments

You can track the transactions processed by PayPal through your account on the platform, under "Transaction tracking". The data in this section is pulled directly from your PayPal account.

Withdrawing the payments you've received is done according to your PayPal account settings (monthly withdrawal, manual, etc.).

Tutors on manual withdrawal can withdraw their payments using the "Withdraw" button. With other withdrawal types, the amount is transferred automatically on a monthly/weekly basis.

Commission

The 20% commission for online lessons includes both the platform's commission and PayPal's processing fee.

Receiving an invoice for the commissions you paid

At the end of each month, PayPal will email you a consolidated invoice for all the commissions you paid on lessons paid by card. The invoice includes the total 20% commission you paid on each lesson.

Issuing a receipt / tax invoice to the student

When the student pays by card, the payment provider (PayPal) transfers their payment directly to your account. The payment doesn't pass through the platform, it goes directly from the student to the relevant tutor.

Handling receipts and/or invoices with students is your responsibility as an independent tutor. It's just like any private lesson or service provided by a professional, as a tutor, you're responsible for issuing the appropriate documents to your students, in accordance with the law and your professional status.
